Evening Primrose Oil (Oenothera Biennis) ☸ Base oils ☸ Food / Cooking

Evening Primrose Oil (Oenothera Biennis)FOOD / COOKING
Evening Primrose oil contains a high concentration of a fatty acid called GLA and it is this fatty acid that is largely responsible for the remarkable healing properties of the plant. In fact, Evening Primrose contains one of the highest concentrations known of this important substance and only a few other plants contain it at all. This makes Evening Primrose an important medicinal herb.

This is one of those prime examples of "Letting food be your medicine and medicine be your food". Native Americans traditionally considered the Evening Primrose plant's seeds, leaves, and roots to be a food. This plant was a staple food for many Native American tribes who ate the boiled, nutty-flavoured root.

Every part of this plant can be used. The leaves can be cooked and eaten as greens. The roots can be boiled like potatoes and allegedly taste like sweet parsnips. The flowers are sweet and can be used in salads or as a pretty garnish. The young seedpods can be steamed and the ripe seeds can be roasted in an oven for 15 to 20 min. at 350° and used on bread or in salads. You can also sprinkle the roasted seeds over any dish like pepper.

Pharmaceutical and food companies are developing GLA-containing supplements and specialty foods for infants, the elderly, and people with health problems. In foods, Evening Primrose oil is used as a dietary source of essential fatty acids. Initial human study is unclear about the effects that EveningPrimrose oil may have on weight loss. Raw

Evening Primrose oil is used as an anti-inflammatory and also in small quantities, such as a teaspoon, as a daily supplement for women.

Evening Primrose oil is very good for salad dressings like a health supplement.

Black Mustard Oil (Brassica Nigra) ☸ Base oils ☸ Food / Cooking

Black Mustard Oil (Brassica Nigra)FOOD / COOKING
The Black Mustard is said to have been employed by the Romans as a green vegetable. The young leaves may be eaten as salad in place of those of the White variety, but are more pungent.

Mustard oil is a pungent plant extract from Mustard Seed, horseradish, and wasabi, and its main constituent is allyl isothiocyanate.

Although it is used in India and elsewhere as a cooking oil, high doses injected or applied topically can cause irritation and inflammation. Mustard oil, a key in India and South Asian cuisine.

Like Olive oil to Mediterranean countries, Mustard oil in Asian countries like India, Nepal, and Bangladesh is used for lots of purposes, in both cooking and care. It almost has a wasabi quality and it works really well with fish.

Omega-3 rich oil is often cooked to a smoking point in India in order to dilute its eye-watering strength a bit (which, unfortunately, is an act that also burns off those healthy omega-3's). Also in foods, Black Mustard Seed is used as a spice and to flavor Mustard condiment.

Black Mustard helps to lose weight: The wonder seeds are packed with B-complex vitamins like folates, niacin, thiamine, riboflavin etc. Apart from all the individual merits of these components, they are great in speeding up one's metabolism leading to weight loss.

However, before using it for cooking or external application, ensure that you are not allergic to it.

Hemp Seed Oil (Cannabis Sativa) ☸ Base oils ☸ Food / Cooking

Hemp Seed Oil (Cannabis Sativa)FOOD / COOKING
The oil from Hemp Seeds is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. This makes it an alternative to Fish and Fish oil for vegetarians and vegans as those are typical sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

The taste is nutty and earthy, making it a great oil to use in salad dressings or as a bread dip.

It is not really suitable for anything sweet or anything delicate that might get overpowered by the strong flavor. You may not want to use it in a raspberry vinaigrette, but instead, use it in non-sweet dressings.

Hemp has a low smoke point, which means that it will start to smoke and change flavor with anything more than just a little bit of heat. You can warm it up, but make sure it doesn't actually get hot, as in any kind of frying.
